It’s no secret that using e-cigarettes, or “vaping,” has become increasingly popular in recent years. One e-cigarette company in particular, JUUL, is in the doghouse for targeting teenagers with its marketing efforts.

The “New American Addiction”

E-cigarettes, or JUULS, are battery-powered devices that are used to inhale a vapor, which typically contains nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. With the help of social media, Juuls quickly grew in popularity, especially among teenagers, following its infamous launch party in 2015 and became known as “the new American addition.”

Between 2017 and 2018, e-cigarette use increased from 11.7 percent to 20.8 percent among high school students, according to the CDC. And unfortunately, two-thirds of JUUL users aged 15-24 do not know that JUUL always contains nicotine.

Not too long after the rise of JUUL, the CDC began investigating an increase in vaping-related illnesses and deaths. A  total of 2,807 hospitalized cases or deaths were reported to CDC and 68 were confirmed as of February 18, 2020.

Health Effects of Vaping

Because e-cigarettes contain nicotine and a variety of toxic chemicals, vaping is linked to a lengthy list of health risks and side effects, including:

  • Nicotine addiction
  • Severe lung injury
  • Seizures
  • Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia
  • Popcorn lung
  • Strokes
  • Heart attacks
  • Cancer

While JUUL’s goal was to provide adult smokers with a “healthier alternative to cigarettes,” the company irresponsibly influenced young non-smokers to try nicotine, putting them at risk for nicotine addiction and a slew of other health conditions. As deaths and illnesses linked to vaping increased, schools, parents and other officials began filing various lawsuits against JUUL.

What to Know About Juul Lawsuits

As of July 15, 2021, there were 2,339 Juul lawsuits from around the United States combined in multidistrict litigation (MDL-2913). In general, the lawsuits claim that JUUL marketed its products to attract minors, promoted nicotine use, failed to warn that its nicotine products are more potent and addictive and that the company’s products are defective and unreasonably dangerous.

Though JUUL did not admit wrongdoing, the company recently agreed to pay $40 million to North Carolina in the first state settlement. Thirteen other attorney generals have sued JUUL. While e-cigarette litigation is still in its early stages, it is only expected to grow, and some legal experts have even compared it to tobacco litigation.

Have You or a Loved one Suffered Serious Injuries or Developed a Nicotine Addiction After Using JUUL?

If you or a loved one have used JUUL and suffered from addiction, injury or illness, you qualify to file a personal injury lawsuit and may be entitled to compensation.

MDLs are often used to save time and money while ensuring similar outcomes in lawsuits that involve large numbers of people and contain related allegations. This means that if you or a loved one has suffered serious injuries or developed a nicotine addiction after using JUUL, you must file your own personal injury claim to obtain any compensation. You should not have to suffer as a result of a company’s carelessness. Ready to take legal action?
